What's more frustrating than knowing deep down you have great ideas to share, but not being able to get them into writing?
It’s not really logical if you think about it: we’re experts in our field, we have incredible talent, long lists of accomplishments, and years of study under our belts.
But on the inside? We’re anxious. We’re insecure. We can’t figure out how to stop criticizing ourselves about not being enough or doing enough in writing about our work.
We just want to be ourselves and enjoy the process of writing.
So what is preventing so many amazing women from diving into inspired action to get what they really want? What’s keeping us stuck in stress and overwhelm, just out of reach from confidence and happiness in our writing?
Three things:
1
perfectionism
If you think you are not perfect enough to be a perfectionist, then you probably are a perfectionist. Perfectionism is not about actually achieving perfection. (How is that defined, anyway??) It’s about the desire to feel perfect.
2
resistance to change
Change means there is something unknown. And we humans, have a fear of the unknown. During the evolution of humans, this fear often served to keep our ancestors alive. Today, it keeps us stuck in our comfort zones.
3
self judgement
We judge ourselves for living human lives. We expect to feel happy, energetic, and motivated at every moment. When this is not our reality, we think that something has gone wrong or that something is wrong with us.,
The solution to all this? Fierce compassion.
Let’s not only believe you are enough, worthy, and deserving of that publication or grant…let’s take inspired action to go out and make it happen.
AND we’ll dig into some evidence-based strategies along the way. 😉
Allow me to introduce myself —
- I’m a STEM writing consultant; helping women enjoy the experience of writing papers, grants, etc.
- I have a BS in biomedical science with a minor in philosophy from The Ohio State University and a PhD in genetics and molecular biology from the University of North Carolina.
- I learned how to think rigorously in my career as a scientist, science education researcher, and professor. These are the same brilliant skills and approaches I bring to my consulting.
- Essentially, I’m a fun, non-judgmental mixture of an intellectual midwife, career mentor, and inquisitive best friend.
how do i know your current experience with writing - and what you need to design and live the one you want?
I've always believed that women should be able to pursue the careers in STEM they desire and have their voice heard in any setting they choose.
Perhaps you can sense where I am going – believing that and acting on that sometimes seems to be on opposite ends of a spectrum.
I myself wanted to believe it was acceptable for me to share my voice and ideas through writing, but still found I was constantly feeling blocked and disorganized in my writing.
Both as a student in classes and a professor in meetings, I often caught myself persistently overthinking what I wanted to write about or how exactly I should phrase a sentence.
How could someone who intellectually knows these feminist truths about worth and confidence and voice not be able to carry these ideals out in my writing?
I didn't know the answer either.
Once I discovered new approaches to writing and practiced them myself, I was able to see and experience the process of writing more clearly, rather than through the fog that had been clouding my vision. I was then able to align my vision for writing with my values and goals.
I match my beliefs with my feelings with my actions.
Neuroplasticity is our brains’ ability to form and reorganize synaptic connections in response to learning and experience. I practice and learn the feelings of confidence, worth, and courage that I want and believe I can have.
Now I experience this confidence in my daily writing AND get to teach women how to uncover their own liberation. Together, we’ll watch as self-criticism, anxiety, guilt, and shame fade away. I’m on a mission to free women from social conditioning and bring fierce compassion to serious change in their approaches to writing.
